History
Cal State East Bay recently changed its name from the former California State University, Hayward. Founded in 1957, the University was part of the Master Plan for Higher Education.
California State University was founded as a campus to serve southern Alameda County and still has a strong focus on service to the local region. It changed its name for California State University, Hayward to California State University, East Bay in 2005 to emphasize its role in the entire region of the eastern side of the San Francisco Bay. It is accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges. Its mission statement identifies its mission as, “To provide an academically rich, multicultural learning environment that prepares all its students to realize their goals, pursue meaningful lifework, and to be socially responsible contributors to their communities, locally and globally.” It is classed as a Master’s College and University I by the Carnegie Institute.
